Collagen – what’s it all about?

Collagen is without a doubt  a  huge buzzword  in the skin industry. It has the power to smooth skin, strengthen nails, and surprisingly IMPROVE  gut health (remember gut health is skin health) (The protein smooths the gut similarly to how it smooths the skin, which can improve digestion.) Who would have thought it, I didn’t know that until I was doing this blog.

So here’s the deal – “Your skin is made up of 75% collagen, but after the age of 25, collagen depletes at a rate of 1.5% a year and after the age of 45, your collagen levels may have fallen by as much as 30%’” Says “Katherine Danzey owner of Rejuvenated

Collagen is responsible for the firmness of the skin. So, when your collagen levels start to deplete, the skin will gradually become more ‘saggy and less plump’.

Lets look at WHAT DEPLETES IT?

AGING

STRESS

PROCESSED FOODS

ALCHOHOL

HIGH SUGAR DIET

UV LIGHT

SMOKING

There are lots of collagen types but Type 1 collagen is the most abundant form of collagen in our skin and levels deplete rapidly as a result of both internal & external ageing It makes sense that providing the body with a nutritional source of bioavailable type 1 collagen will allow a top up of our own collagen stores in the dermis and help to boost the skin’s natural scaffolding.

This can be in a collagen drink/ supplement or drinking fresh bone broth daily has also seen some benefits. But most of us want an easier way to do it and that’s where drinks and supplements come in.

‘Whilst the studies on collagen supplements/drinks are patchy, the evidence that does exist is positive. Importantly, it needs to be hydrolysed collagen which works in synergy with Vitamin C to increase the benefits.

If taking a supplement , For the best absorption it’s advised to take a collagen supplement one hour before or after food.

How does it work?

The nutrients are absorbed into your bloodstream. Once in your body, these collagen peptides then stimulate fibroblasts in your skin to trick your own collagen into becoming more active and produce more:-

         Collagen                Elastin               Hyaluronic acid

“The high proportion of hydrolysed collagen that enters your system when you ingest it, enables 90-95% of the collagen peptides to reach target sites in your body”, says Danzey.

TAKES about 3 months to see a difference, after this time I am sure like me, you will be committed to the results and will want to continue. Thing is – You have to take them regularly, remember that getting fit at the gym takes time and effort – the same applies to your skin.

Here are 4 Benefits:- Some may surprise you:-

#1 SKIN: collagen firms the skin, improves elasticity and hydration –meaning fewer lines and wrinkles.

#2 JOINTS: Helps maintain the integrity of your cartilage, that’s the rubber like tissue that protects the joints.

#3 BONES. Bones are mostly made up collagen, remember it’s a protein and gives bones structure and keeps them strong

#4 GUT HEALTH: It is thought it smooths fine lines it also smoothes out the Gut.

I love the taste of the Rejuvenated collagen drink, I have tasted loads where they add sweetners and they just taste awful, with addend vitamin c, zinc plus b vitamins. No wonder they have won awards.

Remember collagen works in synergy with vitamin c for best results, so check the ingredent list. Both our Collagen drink and supplements have vitamin c and zinc. If allergic to say gluten, yeast or dairy again check the list both of these are free from.

Just before I finish, thought I would mention treatments that work and again you have to be consistent. Peels, micro needling and Dermalux Led Therapy all stimulate collagen naturally. I love having all 3 done at the same time.
